The ParishThe parish of Urchfont lies in central Wiltshire about 5 miles southeast of the market town of Devizes. Urchfont sits on the B3098 road which follows the base of the Wiltshire Downs from Westbury to the A342 Devizes to Andover road. Urchfont is a substantial village with most of the settlement grouped to the north along a narrow lane which leads to Potterne. Urchfont parish is extensive as it was parish designed to take in portions of both the lower land to the north of the Downs plus also a substantial portion of the downland, a strategy designed to maximise the land use of the parish. Urchfont sits at around 120 metres above sea level at the base of the steeply rising escarpment of the Wiltshire Downs which rise to above 200 metres above sea level within a mile of the village. The area has been settled for many years and is littered with prehistoric sites typical of the Downs. What drainage there is is headed for the Senington Brook which flows westwards before merging with the Avon close to Bradford on Avon. The parish is large, over 5,000 acres, and supported just over 1,500 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held by the Abbey of Winchester and supported 16 ploughs as well as 3 mills. |
