The ParishWinsley was a chapelry within the wider parish of Bradford on Avon until the mid-19th century, it was, however, licensed for marriages hence it merits its own page here. Winsley is located in the extreme west of Wiltshire, indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Somerset. Winsley is a substantial village situated on the B3108 road about 2 miles west of the town of Bradford on Avon, the B3108 connects Bradford on Avon with the busy A36 road running along the Avon Valley. Winsley has expanded greatly in recent times with many modern developments augmenting the former village. At the time of this transcript Winsley would have been dependent upon pastoral farming albeit the local limestone provided opportunities for quarrymen and masons. Winsley is drained southeastwards by a small stream running to the nearby Avon and thence turning westwards to reach the Bristol Channel through the Avon Gorge. Winsley is sited at around 120 metres and sits on something of a plateau above the deeply incised Avon Valley some 80 metres lower, local heights rise more gently to the northwest to around 150 metres above the sea. Winsley chapelry covered and area of just under 2,000 acres within Bradford on Avon parish and supported a population of just over 2,800 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Winsley within Domesday Book. |
