Chaceley St John the Baptist

 

The Parish

The geographical position of the parish of Chaceley has changed over the years. Worcestershire and Gloucestershire had a very fretted border and Chaceley, in the extreme southwest of Worcestershire, was surrounded on 3 sides by Gloucestershire. Local Government reorganisation in 1974 took measures to remedy this and Chaceley is now in Gloucestershire. Chaceley is located about 4 miles southwest of the Gloucestershire market town of Tewkesbury but on the opposite side of one of Britain;s major rivers, the River Severn. Chaceley is located at the edge of the Severn flood plain in lanes to the east of the B4211 road which parallels the river. Chaceley would have been a mixed agricultural centre at the time of this transcript, grazing on the flood plain marshlands and arable on the higher ground to the west. The village is sited at about 10 metres above sea level, sufficiently above the Severn to keep dry as land rises to almost 50 metres above sea level within a mile. The parish is slightly smaller than is normal for the area and supported around 350 parishioners. Chaceley is not mentioned specifically in Domesday Book.


The Church

St John the Baptist' church has a central position within the village occupying a corner site at the main junction of lanes within the settlement. Fragments of an earlier Norman building remain but the bulk of the building is dateable to the 14th century. As is usual the Victorians had their way and a thorough restoration took place in the 1880s. The church plan is fairly typical with nave, chancel and western tower augmented with a southern aisle. The buildings slightly elevated site is mostly open to the road as it is only banked up and protected by a low stone wall for much of its boundary. Acacias by a gated stairway to a grassy path is from the western end of the site. There are a few mature trees but they do not unduly restrict photography.
