Dormston St Nicholas

The Parish

The parish of Dormston lies in eastern Worcestershire close to its border with neighbouring Warwickshire. Dormston lies about 7 miles west of the Warwickshire market town of Alcester in area of lanes to the north of the A422 which connects Worcester to Alcester. There is no defined village as such to Dormston merely a scatter of farms and cottages with a notable concentration around a dog-legged lane near Dormston Manor. Dormston lies in a gently undulating plain to the north of the interestingly name Piddle Brook. The parish is set at about 60 metres above sea level in heavy clay soils. The land use is mainly pasture with small fields interspersed with woodland. The parish is a small one almost 800 acres and supported a low population of around 110 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held by William Fitzcorbucion on behalf of the church of St Peter of Westminster where it supported 6 plough together with meadow and woodland.

The Church

St Nicholas' church is sited to the north of the dog-legged lane mentioned above, it is accessed by a metalled track which eventually becomes a footpath. The church is visually picturesque with its attractive tower in black & white studding. There is much use of local timber throughout the building. The oldest parts of the building are the south porch and the tower from 14th and 15th centuries respectively. The main body of the church, chancel and nave were largely rebuilt in Victorian times. The site is accessed by the metalled track and remains hidden behind mature trees until almost alongside. It is screened by a beech hedge and there are many trees around the graveyard making for a difficult photograph.
