The ParishThe parish of Adlingfleet lies in the extreme south of Yorkshire forming a stretch of the border with neighbouring Lincolnshire. Adlingfleet is located about 7 miles east of the port of Goole and a similar distance north of the Lincolnshire industrial town of Scunthorpe. Adlingfleet sits around 2 miles east of the A161 road which connects Goole with Crowle. Adlingfleet is a small and compact village nestling in the junction of two great rivers of England, the confluence of the Yorkshire Ouse and the Trent, and the formation of the Humber Estuary, being just 2 miles to the northeast. This is an area which has been much modified by man, drainage schemes have diverted watercourse and reclaimed much land, valuable farmland which supported the economy of this parish amongst many others. Remnants of the Yorkshire Fen remain, however, and the nearby RSPB reserve of Blacktoft Sands shows the landscape as it would have been before the drainage, a refuge for waterbirds and Marsh Harriers. As mentioned the parish is drained by many works of man, drains and dykes funneling the water to the two nearby rivers and thence to the North Sea through the Humber Estuary. Adlingfleet is sited at just 5 metres above the sea, it is many miles to the west before a significant contour is reached, however across the Trent in Lincolnshire the low bluff on which sits Alkborough rises to 67 metres forming a major local landmark. Adlingfleet parish, like so many containing reclaimed land, is large, it covered almost 4,600 acres and would have supported a population of close to 400 parishioners. In Domesday times Adlingfleet was held by one Geoffrey de la Guerche, a relatively humble place of 4 ploughs and a mill. |
