The ParishThe parish of Barwick in Elmet lies in the eastern portion of the West Riding of Yorkshire, in fact it forms part of the border with the East Riding. Barwick in Elmet is located about 7 miles northeast of the industrial city of Leeds. Barwick in Elmet is a substantial village sitting in lanes about 1 1/2 miles south of the A64 road which connects Leeds with York, the parish also included other settlements such as Scholes and the modern Leeds suburb of Roundhay. The township of Barwick in Elmet was historically a seat of the Northumbrian kings and the site of a 7th century battle lies nearby. The area is underlain by the Carboniferous coal measures and mining for this and also good quality limestone would have supplemented the usual agricultural incomes (here pastoral farming would have predominated). Modern day Barwick in Elmet sits very close to the M1 motorway and is a commuter village for the nearby metropolis of Leeds. The parish is drained eastwards by the Cock Beck, which joins the Wharfe near Tadcaster before reaching the North Sea through the Humber estuary. Barwick in Elmet is sited at around 80 metres above the sea in gently rolling countryside. Barwick in Elmet parish is a typical northern parish, extensive in area - it covered over 8,300 acres and together with all its smaller settlements supported a population of almost 2,300 parishioners. Barwick in Elmet is mentioned briefly in Domesday Book, it was held by one Ilbert de Lacy, whilst not specifically enumerated in southern detail mention is made of its 3 mills. |
