The ParishThe parish of Muston lies in the extreme east of Yorkshire, indeed it forms a short stretch of Yorkshire's North Sea coast, at the most northern point of the East Riding. Muston is located about 2 miles southwest of the port & seaside resort of Filey. Muston is a small and rather linear village sitting along the A1039 road which connects Filey with the A64 (York to Scarborough) road. Muston grew up around the point where the A1039 crosses the River Hertford. Although principally an agricultural community, with a mixed farming regime dominated 2 to 1 by arable, there was some quarrying of the local stone to vary the economy. The River Hertford drains through Muston parish to reach the North Sea to the south of Filey, a short distance of less than 2 miles. Muston is sited at around 40 metres above the sea and sits at the eastern end of the Yorkshire Wolds, the Wolds Way National Trail passes through Muston en route to Filey and its ending. Muston parish was fairly typically sized for its area, it covered around 2,200 acres and would have supported a population of around 400 parishioners. In Domesday times Muston was principally held by Gilbert of Ghent, with a small portion retained by the King, offering 16 ploughs it was a mid-sized rural community even then. |
