The ParishThe parish of Scrayingham lies in central Yorkshire on the eastern banks of the River Derwent which here forms the border between the East & North Ridings, Scrayingham being just within the East Riding. Scrayingham is a small and compact village lining the river bank for a quarter mile or so and situated about 10 miles northeast of the city of York. Scrayingham lies in lanes about 3 miles north of the A166 road which connects York with Driffield and The Wolds. At the time of this transcript Scrayingham was a farming community and this still applies today, then pastoral farming on the thick clay soils of the Derwent valley, today more arable enabled by heavy machinery. Scrayingham is drained southwards by the Derwent which heads for the Ouse and thence the North Sea through the Humber Estuary. Scrayingham is sited at around 20 metres above the sea as it sits in the valley but local heights rise to over 70 metres in gently rolling countryside. Scrayingham parish was fairly typically sized for the area, covering just under 4,700 acres it would have supported a population of just under 500 parishioners. In Domesday times Scrayingham was held by one Hugh the son of Baldric and offered 20 ploughs, small meadows and 2 mills. |
