The ParishThe chapelry of Yafforth, within the wider parish of Danby Wiske, lies in northern Yorkshire about 2 miles west of the market town of Northallerton. Yafforth is a small and compact village which sits on the B6271 road which connects Northallerton with Richmond. Whilst only a chapelry Yafforth was licensed for marriages during the period of this transcript. Like many villages in the northern Vale of York Yafforth would have had a farming economy dominated by pastoral farming, mainly of cattle, today the area has moved more towards arable. Modern developments have come to Yafforth, the East Coast main railway line between London & Edinburgh cuts through between Yafforth & Northallerton. Yafforth is drained southwards by the River Wiske, this joins the Swale and eventually reaches the North Sea through the Humber Estuary. Yafforth is sited at around 40 metres above the sea in gentle terrain which rises to only 60 metres or so within some distance. Yafforth chapelry covered roughly 1,100 acres of Danby Wiske parish and within that area would have been supported a population of just under 200 parishioners. In Domesday times Yafforth was a direct holding of King William but was described at the time as "waste" being largely unproductive land but with potential for many ploughs. |

Plain, unruled book, a continuation of the extant composite register in contravention of Hardwicke's segregation & wording requirements | Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur albeit few in number | Fading of this register may lead to a misread |
2 | 25th March 1762 - 2nd April 1783 & 2nd May 1795 - 1st November 1810 | North Yorkshire Record Office - Northallerton - Reference - PR/YAF 1/2 | Plain, unruled book, a further composite register in contravention of Hardwicke's segregation & wording requirements | Grade 4 Register - there are notable quality issues with this register which may have resulted in many misreads | The first portion of this register is faded in places to invisibility and some pure guesswork has been required, a check has been made to Bishop's Transcripts to minimise error but misreads may still be frequent. The latter portion is Grade 2. |
3 | 22nd June 1784 - 19th June 1791 | North Yorkshire Record Office - Northallerton - Reference - PR/YAF 1/3 | Plain, unruled & margined book containing combined Banns & Marriages | Grade 4 Register - there are notable quality issues with this register which may have resulted in many misreads | Further fading to invisibility required a check to BTs but once again misreads are still likely |
4 | 23rd November 1814 - 20th May 1837 | North Yorkshire Record Office - Northallerton - Reference - PR/YAF 1/4 | Standard Rose style preprinted and prenumbered Marriage register | Grade 2 Register - not a perfect read but with a low likelihood of misreads | None |
