Ashby parish lies in south-eastern Norfolk, just to the
north of the A146 Norwich to Lowestoft road. The parish is one of a number
of small compact parishes which lies between the River Yare and this road
on fertile agricultural lands. What passes for today's village lies along
a couple of lanes running past the church and hall. |

The majority of the records in this transcript
were colected from Microfilm MF/RO404 in the collection of the Norfolk Record
Office. This standard 800-entry book has been considerably mis-used by the
cleric for the majority of the period. For some peculiar reason he choose
only to use the right-hand sheet and also to add his own numbering; in 1857
a new clerk then filled the remaining pages and utilised the pre-printed
numbering; on reaching the end of the book 2 years were then inserted back
at the beginning on the left hand sheets. In 1875 a new book was purchased,
unfortunately this has yet to be deposited and as a consequence Bishop's
Transcripts were used to add that latter period; years 1875, 1877 and 1880
are missing from that series. Should this second book ever come into the
public domain these entries will be added. The standard of image on the microfilm and BTs was adequate so the usual caveats around hand-writing and mis-interpretation apply. Hopefully few errors will have crept into this transcript. |
