Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Ashmanhaugh lies in northeastern Norfolk
about 2 miles east of the large village of Coltishall and about the same
north of the large village of Wroxham. There is not much to Ashmanhaugh,
no village to speak of, merely a few properties along a lane running westwards
from the A1151 road (Wroxham to Stalham) and also along the lane which
runs to St Swithin's church. Ashmanhaugh would have been a very rural
agricultural place at the time of this transcript, most folk being involved
in the growing of cereals. The parish sits on a very extensive plateau,
there is scarcely a contour line for miles to the north of Ashmanhaugh,
on good yet easily worked soils so ideal for the growing of crops. |

Unfortunately the registers covering the period of this transcript have yet to be deposited with the Norfolk Record Office - presumably they are still in use? As a consequence the only public domain records are those of the Bishop's Transcripts. These records were gathered from the BTs on Microfiche at the Norfolk Record Office. Sadly these records are not complete, in particular there are 2 large gaps in the period. The quality of the BTs is always less good than the registers and these were rather misty and in places damaged by damp making for a tricky read. Hopefully few errors will have been made but they are possible. Should the parish finally deposit then these records will be rechecked and completed. Keen eyed readers will note that there is a mother named "Edward" - this is as written in the register - she is Elizabeth on other entries for the samue family. |
