Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of West Beckham lies in northern Norfolk about
3 miles southwest of the seaside town of Sheringham. West Beckham, which
subsumed the former sister parish of East Beckham, sits in lanes about
3/4 mile south of the A149 road which links the market town of Holt with
Cromer. The main properties of West Beckham are grouped around a crossroads
of lanes with spurs running both east/west and also north from that crossroads.
By Norfolk standards West Beckham sits at a relatively high point, some
95 metres above the sea, the parish occupies part of the Cromer - Holt
ridge, a remnant glacial feature. The soils are rather sandy & stony
as a consequence but modern machinery has rendered arable farming practicable
on what would probably have been heath and pasture at the time of this
transcript. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of this transcript and runs onwards to finish towards the end of the 20th century. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1421 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office which was used to complete this transcript. This film is relatively recent and reflects improved standards of filming in recent times. The handwriting, it must be said, at times left a lot to be desired but all entries were readable with care. It should be noted that there are a number of entries were the use of aliases has required recording entries twice under each alternate name. |
