Beeston St Lawrence

Baptisms 1813 to 1880

The small parish of Beeston St Lawrence sits in north-eastern Norfolk about 3 miles north-east of Wroxham and the same west of Stalham. The parish, a small scatter of farms around the eponymous Hall, is situated on the A1151 road linking Norwich to Stalham. This parish had a tiny population mostly estate workers of less than a hundred souls. The evidence for the paltry population is writ large in the register which is astonishingly short for the 64 years of the period covered by the project.

St Lawrence church sits right beside the A1151 on a raised site. It is an old church for Norfolk as evidenced by its round "Saxon" tower. In reality the fabric largely dates from the 12th century with the later nave being added in the 14th century when most Norfolk churches were expanded. The church has one minor claim to fame - the parapet which previously adorned the tower was blown off in 1945 by a German V2 rocket, this must have been one the most exciting episodes in the long history of a small country church.

Given the tiny population it is not surprising a single register book covers not only the period of the transcript but indeed right up to 1971, at which point it was deposited still unfilled. The register is filmed on Microfiche 3 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. At less then 50 entries to describe the transcript as anything other than straightforward would be an exaggeration!
