Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Blakeney is in North Norfolk indeed the
village is coastal and a former port. The village is nowadays almost isolated
from the open sea by the spit of Blakeney Point but has found a new role
as a yachting centre and nature & wildlife viewing mecca. The compact
village sits mostly between the narrow winding coast road the A149 and
the quay or staithe as they are known in Norfolk. Today Blakeney is a
bustling centre for the visiting tourists with pubs and hotels bursting
at the seams on holiday weekends, as can be seen from the occupations
of the fathers in the transcript it was formally a fishing port. |

The two registers which form the basis for
this transcript are filmed on Microfilms MF691 and MF692 in the collection
of the Norfolk Record Office. The filming is not recent and could be better,
however the original registers would make filming a challenge whatever the
technology used. The first register is the better preserved and the images
for this are adequate to the task, the second register is badly faded and
some entries are faded almost to illegibility. Reference to the Bishop's
Transcripts had to be made on occasion just to ascertain the content. Sadly this handicap is also compounded by some rather curious handwriting. The parish has not been blessed by good writing and some hands were rather difficult. There could well be a surfeit of Tailors in the parish as in one hand it was almost impossible to tell them from the Sailors! The whole transcript therefore carries a slight "health-warning" that errors of interpretation and misreading may have occurred but it is hoped these are few. |
