1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Brettenham St Andrew |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Brettenham lies on the southern border of
Norfolk with neighbouring Suffolk. Brettenham lies about 4 miles east
of the market town of Thetford on the narrow lane that winds from Thetford
to East Harling alongside the River Thet. This was always a sparsely populated
area of Breckland and nowadays it is little changed other than by the
growth of the large forestry plantations in the area. The settlement of
Brettenham is a mere hamlet, not a fully fledged village, with a handful
of farms and cottages grouped around a road junction just north of the
river. The brevity of the transcript is also testament to the low population
in past times when the area would have been dominated by sheep and rabbit
warrens. |

A single standard 800-entry register covers not only the period of this transcript but runs through almost to the end of the 20th century. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1386 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. The film is one of the more recent filmings and as such benefits from crisp and clear images, the handwriting, whilst mixed, is acceptable - as the population was small no one writer persists for many entries and families are relatively few. Hopefully few errors will have crept in to this short transcript. |
