Baptisms 1841 to 1880
New Catton parish was created in early Victorian times
from parts of the Norwich City parish of St Clement and the county parishes
of (Old) Catton & Sprowston. The need for the new parish had arisen
as a result of the sudden expansion of the city of Norwich beyond its
walls into suburbs. The growth of the city was rapid and swathes of former
countryside were covered in terraced housing to accommodate a growing
population. Remarkably in a city fond of recycling housing the terraces
survive in the main and are popular with younger folk starting out on
the home owning trail. |

Two registers cover the period for the transcript, the first a 1600-entry register commencing in 1841 is filmed on Microfilm MFRO265 & 266; the second an 800-entry register which continues beyond the end of the trancript period 1893 is filmed on MF1679. Both films are modern and of good quality with clear and contrasting images. This parish does contain a caveat against the handwriting which leaves a lot to be desired in places and could have lead to transcription mis-reads. Readers will also note that a lot of spellings are "eccentric" but have been left as written. |
