Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Cockley Cley lies in western, central Norfolk
about 3 miles southwest of the market town of Swaffham. Cockley Cley sits
about 2 1/2 miles west of the A1065 road which connects Swaffham with
the Suffolk market town of Brandon. Cockley Cley is a small and compact
village sitting in the valley of a small tributary of the River Wissey,
it sits on the northern fringes of Norfolk's Brecklands. At the time of
this transcript this area would have largely been used for grazing of
sheep and also for the keeping of warrenries, farmed rabbits. Today much
of the area has been set over for growing trees, serried ranks of conifers
cover much of the northern area of the parish. The parish was indeed a
large one if sparsely populated, at over 4,400 acres it was extensive
by Norfolk standards. |

A single, standard 800-entry register book covers the period of this transcript and runs onwards to finish in 1929. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1399 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. The register starts off a little chaotically but eventually settles down as the clerk becomes familiar with the format. The images and handwriting were adequate to the task making for a straightforward piece to prepare. |
