Baptisms 1813 to 1880
Downham Market is a major market town in West Norfolk.
The town is situated south of the port of King's Lynn along the A10, although
this road now by-passes the town. Downham Market is very much the capital
of the Norfolk Fenland and a major shopping and transport centre for the
area. Situated at the confluence of the River Wissey with the Great Ouse
the town is also a focal point in the Fenland drainage network - the sluices
at Denver control the flow of water over most of the southern and eastern
Fens. |

The registers which form the basis for this
transcripts consist of 4 standard books, the first of 1600 entries, the
second and third are 800 entry and the latter part of the transcript is
another 1600 entry book which continues beyond the end of this transcript.
All four books are filmed on Microfilm MF1427 in the collection and from
which this transcript has been prepared. On the whole the quality of image is satisfactory but in such a long series there are always periods less good than others. A similar comment applies to the standard of hand-writing which varies considerably across the more than 4000 entries and at times is difficult to read. It has to be said that despite these caveats this was a fairly straightforward transcript to prepare and it is to be hoped few errors have crept into its compilation. |
