Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Foulden lies in western Norfolk
about 10 miles southeast of the market town of Downham Market
and about the same north of the market town of Thetford. Foulden
sits in the valley of the River Wissey a couple of mile east of
the A134 road which links Thetford to King's Lynn. Foulden is a
compact little village built around lanes which roughly describe
a figure "8" and for Norfolk is quite an isolated place being 2
miles or more from the next village. Foulden sits on a boundary
between the northern edge of Breckland and the start of Fenland,
the Wissey valley being only 3 metres above the sea and Foulden
a little over 10 metres more. There is much forestry in the area
nowadays but in the past there would have been extensive sheep
grazing and warrenries for rabbits. |

Two standard 800-entry registers cover the period of the transcript, the second continuing on to the end of the 20th century. The first register, covering 1813 to 1863, is filmed on Microfiche 6 & 7 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office. These fiche are rather elderly and the images poor so much reference was made to the online images available on the Familysearch web site to obtain a decent image. The second register is filmed on Microfilm MFRO769 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and this is a much more impressive film. The images are crisp and clear with good contrast making for a straightforward transcript to prepare. |
