1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Gooderstone St George |
Baptisms 1813 to 1866
Gooderstone parish lies in Mid-western Norfolk to the
south-west of the market town of Swaffham. The parish is situated along
a tributary of the River Wissey, a long straggle of a village just off
the floodplain. The main centre of the village is around a staggered crossroads
where lanes meet and the church and village pub preside. St George's church is in the heart of the present day village, close by the main crossroads. The church is from the 13th century in the Early English style, not a typical Norfolk church at all. The church is large and set in a pleasant graveyard behind flint walls. |

It is unfortunate that Gooderstone has yet
to deposit the whole of its registers covering the period of the project.
The first register - finishing in 1864 is a standard 800 entry book filmed
on Microfilm MF1384 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office. Sadly
only Bishop's Transcripts covering the remaining part of 1864 and 1866 survive
to add to this book. The film that forms the bulk of this transcript is
clear and recent in filming with excellent clarity and contrast. It it to be hoped that the parish will deposit the 2nd register soon, these records will, of course, then be added to complete the transcript. |
