1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Harleston Congregationalist |
Baptisms 1813 to 1837
The Congregationalist sect has a chequered history in Harleston; this chapel was established first in 1708 but by 1773 had closed. The chapel was revived in 1788 and was rebuilt in 1819. There were strong associations with other chapels in the area, particularly at Denton and Wortwell. The chapel is now used by the United Reform Church and is sited in Mendham Lane, Harleston. The register which forms the basis of this transcript was deposited as part of the legislation associated with the introduction of Civil Registration and was thence deposited at The National Archives where it forms deposit RG4/1958. The register is a large format plain book which has been ruled and columned as a register by the relevant clerics, the numbering used in this transcript is merely a counter from the first entry after 1813; the actual register is un-numbered. A copy of the TNA film is held by the Norfolk Record Office on Microfilm MF1151 and this was used to prepare this transcript. The film is not of the best quality and the register is rather scruffily kept with much abuse of the ruled lines e.g. there are attempts to insert omitted entries into the correct spaces by squeezing two entries into one line. All this makes for rather challenging reading and it is hoped that this hasn't caused too many errors to creep in. |
