Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Hassingham lies in eastern Norfolk about
4 miles southwest of the large village of Acle and lying in the valley
of the River Yare. Hassingham is a very small place indeed with no distinct
village as such, merely a scatter of farms and cottages. The parish consists
of two quite different landscapes, the pastures alongside the Yare are
full of sheep and cattle (and in wintertime flocks of wild geese) whilst
the higher portions of the parish are typical Norfolk arable land. Hassingham
would undoubtedly have made economic use of those two landscapes in the
past and marsh men and wildfowlers were common along this stretch of the
river. |

The baptismal register covering 1813 onwards has yet to be deposited with Norfolk Record Office as yet (one of a dwindling set thankfully). As a result this transcript has had to be prepared from those Bishop's Transcripts which survive. These are incomplete with only 1873 & 1874 surviving from the period 1865 - 1880. Bishops' Transcripts are available to browse as images on the free web site Familysearch and given their often poor state of preservation these images were used in this instance. Some digital manipulation was required to achieve readable results but in the main they were an acceptable resource for the task. |
