Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Horstead lies in Eastern Norfolk just a
few miles north of the City of Norwich. The parish is on the south bank
of the River Bure and forms a twin settlement with its neighbour Coltishall.
The village centre marks the junction of two B roads the B1150 which connects
Norwich with North Walsham and the B1354 which leads from Wroxham to the
Norwich/Cromer road. Horstead is now a substantial village with much commuter
infill, in the past it was a largely farming community with land mixed
between the arable plateau and wetter pasture land along the water-meadows
of the River Bure valley. |

Two register books cover the period of the
transcript, this is masked within the numbering as the second book has no
preprinted numbering and the clerics chose to continue the sequence completed
in the first register. The first book is a standard 800-entry ledger, the
second is a curious register with just 4 entries to a sheet rather than
the standard 8. Both registers are on Microfilm MF592 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. The film whilst rather elderly has adequate imaging and clearly the registers themselves were well preserved as most entries were readily viewable. Some entries suffered from untidy hands but on the whole this was a straightforward transcript to prepare and it is to be hoped few errors will have crept into its production. |
