The parish of Houghton St Giles (the suffix necessary
as there are 3 Houghton's in Norfolk) is located in North Norfolk about
3 miles north of the market town of Fakenham on the road that leads to
the renowned pilgrimage site of Walsingham. Houghton St Giles is sited
in the valley of the River Stiffkey and consists of a small group of cottages
around a junction of lanes and the crossing of that river by partly bridged
fords. Houghton St Giles is the site of part of the Walsingham pilgrimage
in that it possesses the Chapel of Renunciation and the Slipper Chapel
(from whence pilgrims allegedly walked barefoot to Walsingham) and thus
is inextricably linked with its larger neighbour. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of the transcript and continues until the late 20th century. This book is filmed on Microfilm MF908 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. The film, whilst not one of the most recent batch, is relatively good with clean and crisp images making for a straightforward read. As a result this was a relatively easy piece to prepare and hopefully few errors will have crept in to its production. |
