Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Morston lies on Norfolk's north coast just
west of the twin villages of Blakeney and Cley-next-the-Sea. The small
village is set a short way inland from the foreshore which is brackish
salt marsh divided by creeks and inlets. The shore is inland of the vast
shingle spit of Blakeney Point and thus protected from the ravages of
the North Sea. The village is a collection of cottages around a double-bend
in the main A149 coast road with an extension northwards along the road
to the Staithe (North Norfolk for a dock). The parish occupants were evenly
split between marine activities (including a strong Coast Guard presence)
and traditional farming activities on the higher land of the southern
portion of the parish. |

The records are curious for Morston, a standard
800-entry book begun in 1813 was strangely abandoned in 1836, a second book
commenced in 1842 covers to the end of the transcription period. The intervening
gap is covered by a filmed register of baptism certificates but may well
be an incomplete record of events. Both books are erratic in their completion
with many entries squeezed into foot and side spaces and often there are
omitted entries inserted from recollection. The registers used for this transcript were filmed on microfiche 2 for the baptism certificates and microfilm MF1000 for the register books. The films are adequate (if faded) to the purpose and apart from the strange history of the records was a relatively straightforward transcript to produce. It is to hoped that few errors have been made in its completion, |
