Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of St Margaret lies in the western part of
the city of Norwich, one of a string of churches built along the line
of the ancient west to east through-route across the city, here represented
by St Benedict's Street. St Margaret was a tiny area of the city, it was
only a little more than 100 yards to St Lawrence to its east and to St
Swithin to its west. Within this tiny area were crammed a population of
close to a thousand souls. Whilst not one of the poorest areas of the
city St Margaret parish would have been a hive of manufacturing, small
scale and artisanal in nature, as well as the homes of this population.
Nowadays much of the area has been depopulated, a realm of small specialist
shops & businesses and a thriving restaurant scene. |

Two standard 800-entry register books cover the period of this transcript, the second running onwards to completion in the early 20th century. Whilst both books were originally filmed on Microfiche they have been refilmed recently on Microfilm MFRO232 and higher quality imagery is available on both the free web site Familysearch and for a fee on the major commercial sites. As a result this was straightforward piece to prepare. Comment must, however, be made on the clerical quality which shows not only chaotic sequencing at times and also some highly idiosyncratic spelling which has been left as written. |
