1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Norwich St Martin at Oak |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of St Martin at Oak is one of those within
the mediaeval city wall of Norwich. Occupying the north-western corner
of the city in the old Saxon portion of the city known as Norwich-over-the-Water.
Oak Street is the main thoroughfare which defined the area and donated
its name to the church. During the period of the transcript this was a
bustling artisan area with numerous yards crammed into the areas between
the main streets. Nowadays it is trying to recover from being a largely
factory dominated area with new developments of flats and town-houses
once again raising the population levels. |

These records were transcribed from Microfilm
MFRO37/38 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office. There are two
register books covered by this film, a book of 1600 entries and a second
of 2400; regrettably the registers of St Martins were present in the church
when the area was flooded in 1912 and suffered some water damage. The first
register shows some soaking of the top edges with the top two entries on
the right-hand folio faded and the paper stained. The second register fortunately
escaped with only minor damage. The filming is a very elderly vintage (the Norwich registers were filmed over 20 years ago to prevent wear and tear) and suffers from comparison with current filming quality. Despite the damage the entries were in the main readable - a tribute to the general good handwriting used; some entries had to be clarified by reference to Bishops Transcripts. |
