1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Norwich St Stephens |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
Situated in the heart of Norwich's shopping district the
parish of St Stephens was the most populous in 1831 and contained most
of the residences of the wealthy of Norwich. Nowadays the area is dominated
by the retail trade, with the old church itself forming an entryway to
the Mammon of the Chapelfield Mall. The parish of St Stephens incorporated
most of the southern segment of the ancient mediaeval city from the edge
of the market place up to the walls. |

This is an extensive transcript with 5 separate
register covering the period of the project. The first, 1600-entry register
runs from January 1813 to July 1827, the second also of 1600-entries continues
until February 1839, the third register is a standard 800-entry register
but covers from then until July 1856, the fourth register is another 1600-entry
ledger and finishes August 1878 there are, of course, a further two years
of entries from the fifth register which goes beyond the period of this
transcript. All 5 registers are filmed on microfiche 29 to 40 in the collection
of the Norfolk Record Office. The quality of these fiche is extremely poor reflecting the quality of filming that could be achieved in that period. Indeed many of the entries in the earlier registers cannot simply be read. However, the digitally enhanced versions of these fiche are now available on the Latter Day Saints Familysearch site to browse. These images are of such a better quality that it was decided to prepare this transcript entirely from those images. This action rendered what would have been a difficult exercise into something almost straightforward. However it must be stated that there are times when handwriting and image quality were such that guesswork was used. It is to be hoped that few errors have crept into this transcript as a result. |
