1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Norwich Workhouse |
Baptisms & Births 1813 to 1880
During the period of this transcription there were two Norwich Workhouses in existence, the first in the St Andrews area ceased to record entries shortly after the start period of this transcript, the latter commenced recording in 1836. The Heigham workhouse, situated on Bowthorpe Road eventually became the core of today's West Norwich Hospital. Three register's cover the period of this transcript. The short three years of the St Andrew's workhouse are deposited as NGP/1/78 it is a simple plain unruled book. For the Heigham workhouse two registers are deposited NGP/2/15/3 is a large format double page spread register described as a births register but for which the majority show a workhouse baptismal date. The third register (NGP/2/15/4) is a standard parish register style baptismal register with 8 entries per page. The latter register overlaps datewise with its predecessor and in many cases contains many addition pieces of information. Where entries are found in both these two sets of data are merged and listed under the NGP/2/15/3 sequence number (added by the transcriber). This data includes additional forenames for child and or parent and in many cases reveals that there was a male parent identified whereas the 1st register often listed only mothers - if from that NGP/2/15/3 register do not assume illegitimacy although most were so. The NGP2/15/3 register becaomes very slapdash in the mid 1860s and several entries were noted with inconsistent information e.g. baptism-date before birth-date. The clerical standard of NGP/2/15/3 is poor and there is some fading, the spreading of onformation across a double-page spread without ruled lines also caused some reading issues, apologies are made in advance should any misreads have been made as a result. |
