Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Oxborough lies in western Norfolk about
7 miles southwest of the market town of Swaffham. Oxborough is sited in
lanes just east of the A134 road, which the port of King's Lynn with Thetford.
Oxborough is one of a string of parishes that sit along the eastern edge
of Norfolk's Fens. To the south of the parish the River Wissey makes its
way into the flat lands of the Fens and Oxborough sits on a slightly higher
ridge of land keeping its feet dry. Oxborough cannot be mentioned without
reference to its Hall and the Bedingfield family that so dominate this
area, the Hall is a magnificent example of a albeit much altered 15th
century country estate and is much visited as a tourist site today. The
Bedingfield's were, however, Catholics and with secret chapels kept that
faith throughout the centuries. Most of the properties in Oxborough are
sited along the lane that leads from northeast to southwest through the
village, it runs from Swaffham to Stoke Ferry and the heart of the village
is the crossroads by the pub. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of the transcript and continues to completion in the late 20th century. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1399 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. Whilst a few entries are faded the majority are straightforward to read and this was a relatively easy piece to prepare. |
