Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of South Pickenham lies in the southwest of
central Norfolk, it sits about 4 miles to the southeast of the market
town of Swaffham. South Pickenham sits astride the narrow B1077 road which
connects Swaffham with Watton and which performs a series of right-angle
bends through South Pickenham. There is not much to South Pickenham, just
a scatter of farms and cottages together with the grounds of Pickenham
Hall which clearly dominated the parish and was home to the prominent
Applewhaite family. South Pickenham sits on the western banks of the infant
River Wissey which passes through and decorates the estate of the Hall.
The Peddars Way National Trail passes just east of South Pickenham. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers the period of this transcript and indeed runs onwards to complete at the end of the 20th century. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF1622 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office. This film is a relatively recent production and benefits from the clear and crisp images which are available today. The start of the register is a little chaotic, the clerk clearly unsure how to complete the details required by Rose's Act but matters soon settle down. The standard of handwriting throughout is a little trying but hopefully few misreads will have been committed. |
