Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Poringland lies about 5 miles southeast
of the City of Norwich. The village is astride the B1332 that connects
Norwich to the Suffolk market town of Bungay. The centre of Poringland
was formerly at the crossroads of this B road with lanes running north
and south close to the church. Nowadays Poringland has expanded considerably
as a dormitory suburb (albeit with a short stretch of open countryside
between it and Norwich) and has absorbed the settlement of Framingham
Earl. There has been considerable strip development along the B road towards
Norwich with many small estates of housing close behind. |

Two register books cover the period of the transcript. The first finishing in 1863 is a standard 800-entry register - the incumbent's habit of starting each new year on a fresh page accounts for the rather strange numbering. The second register commencing in 1863 and running to 1899 is a nonstandard register, half-size with only 4 entries to a page yet pre=printed and pre-numbered. Both registers are filmed on Microfilm MF1640 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. The film is a modern one with excellent quality throughout making for a rather straightforward transcript to prepare. It is to be hoped few errors will have crept through the process. |
