1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Rockland All Saints Workhouse |
Baptisms 1837 to 1866
The Workhouse at Rockland All Saints was erected in 1836 to serve the Wayland Union, this was somewhat an anomaly as Rockland All Saints village is in fact in the ancient Hundred of Shropham. However this Hundred was too small to support it's own Workhouse and Rockland served the wider area. The Workhouse register which commences in 1837 covers the period up to 1914, however there is a large gap from the entries in 1866 into the 20th Century. Whether records are missing for this period or there were no births/baptisms is unclear from the register; for the purposes of locating the relevant entry these records are numbered purely in the sequence found in the register not represnting specific numbering as in a standard parish register. The period covered by this transcript, 1837 to 1866, consists largely of baptismal and birth records, however for 1866 only the birth date is recorded. The records were filmed on Microfilm MF/X/334 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office. The images were clear and the hand-writing for the majority was legible. The principal drawback of a Workhouse register is that there is no or little "repeat business" which often helps to determine unclear surnames - it is fair to add that some names have been interpreted as best as possible. |
