1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Roydon by Diss St Remigius |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
There are two Roydon parishes in Norfolk, one close to
King's Lynn and this parish close to Diss hence the modifier to the parish
name. Roydon is situated in the far south of Norwich immediately west
of the market town of Diss. The parish lies in the valley of the River
Waveney which forms the border between Norfolk & Suffolk, here approaching
its headwaters. A major east-west road the A1066 parallels the border
but keeps its feet dry above the grazing marshes of the flood-plain. Roydon
is one of a string of settlements that would have exploited not only the
arable land of the valley slopes but also the pastoral marshes. |

Two register books cover the period of the project, the first a standard 800-entry ledger runs through to 1859, the second a 1600-entry book extends well beyond the period of the transcript until modern times. Both registers are filmed on Microfilm MF907 in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. Whilst the film is not recent enough to show the qualities now achieved by filming it is adequate to the job. As a result this was a fairly straightforward transcript to prepare and subject to the usual caveats regarding sometimes difficult hands it is to be hoped few errors will have crept into its production. |
