1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Great Ryburgh St Andrew |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Great Ryburgh lies in central Norfolk in
the valley of the River Wensum, just south-east of the market town of
Fakenham The parish is a long strip of houses and cottages lying along
an east-west road which leads up from the bridge crossing the Wensum.
The core of the village, with church & pub, lies closest to the river
and the village has expanded westwards from there. There is quite a rise
in height (for Norfolk) with the western end being some 60 feet higher
than the river crossing. |

The baptism registers for Great Ryburgh are
curious in that there are 2 part completed registers which seem to have
both been abandoned roughly halfway through than a completely normal 800-entry
ledger. It is unclear why the two earlier registers were abandoned as they
show no hints of damage. The whole set of 3 registers is an early deposit
and is filmed on microfiche 7 to 10 in the collection of the Norfolk Record
Office. In common with most early fiche the state of the filming is poor by present standards and many parts of the earlier registers are faded almost to invisibility. Several periods had to be verified with the Bishop's Transcripts in order to read the entries concerned. It is unfortunate that the parish is also troubled with clerics of uncertain hand. Whilst every effort has been made to render the entries accurately it is expected these difficulties will have conspired to introduce error. |
