1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Scottow All Saints |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Scottow sits in north-eastern Norfolk, north
of the Bure Valley village of Coltishall and south of North Walsham. The
ancient centre of the parish is centred on the hall, where All Saints
is located; however, the modern village has moved roughly a mile to the
east onto the B1150 Norwich to North Walsham road. This movement has been
caused by the building of the World War 2 airbase at Coltishall which
occupies much of Scottow partish leaving a clusterof farms around the
hall cut off from the south. |

The two register books comprising this transcript
were filmed on Microfilm MF1642 in the collection of the Norfolk Record
Office. This is a comparatively recent filming and demonstrates the superior
techniques availble today. The images are clear and contrasting with good
focus and little evidence of fading. This would have led to a very straightforward transcription had it not been for the handwriting of the incumbants at the church. It is fair to say that Scottow has not been blessed with the clearest hands. The major contributor indeed had a marked tendancy to cram detail into the entry places and as aconsequence adopted a cramped and odd writing style which was difficult to decipher in places. Every effort has been made to accurately transcribe but it is feared that on this occasion there may be interpretaive errors which could result in reader corrections. |
