1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Sea Palling St Margaret |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Palling (home to modern Sea Palling) lies
in northeastern Norfolk on the coast of the North Sea roughly midway between
Cromer and Great Yarmouth. The coast is low and protected only by a narrow
belt of sand dunes, Sea Palling lies inland of these but only 3 metres
above sea level - this is a coast which has often flooded notably in 1953.
The village is centered around a junction of the narrow coastal road from
Ingham to Winterton with the short lane which leads to the coast. Nowadays
Sea Palling is a bucket and spade destination with wide sandy beaches
and many facilities to cater for the visitor. I personally prefer the
area in the winter when the crowds have gone and it is the haunt of geese
and seals. |

Two standard 800 entry register books cover the period of the transcript. The first is filmed on Microfilm MF591, the second (which runs on to modern times) on Microfilm MF709 both in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office and from which this transcript was prepared. Both films are from the earlier batch of microfilming and suffer from the defects of that period. In addition the first register has suffered some abuse in its history - furthermore the parish clerks have not always had the best hands leading to some difficulty in deciphering some of the entries. As a consequence this was not a straightforward transcript to prepare and there remains some doubt over the possibility of error. This transcript does carry a health warning! |
