Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Shernborne lies in
the extreme northwest of Norfolk not too far from its western Wash
coastline. Shernborne is located roughly 11 miles north of the
port of King's Lynn and 5 miles southeast of the large village of
Docking. Shernborne is a rather small and compact village set
around a triangular village green which forms the crossroads of
lanes, the village sits a couple of miles inland of the coastal
A149 road. The village sits upon the western slopes of Norfolk's
chalklands, topped, to the east, by the course of the ancient
Peddar's Way, now a National Trail. These unproductive lands would
have been largely set to sheep in medieval times but today are
almost entirely arable. The lands of the parish were largely held
by the Shernborne family, a practice which discouraged inbound
migration and led to today's very small community. |

A single standard 800-entry register book covers not only the period of this transcript but runs onward to completion in the late 20th century, illustrative of the small congregation. This register is filmed on Microfilm MF585 in the collection of Norfolk Record Office which was used to prepare this transcript. In recent times digitised imagery of this register has appeared on most of the commercial web sites for those with subscriptions. Whilst the clerical standard leaves a little to be desired, two entries carry incomplete dates and others are wildly out-of-sequence, and the practice of starting a new page for each year means the numbering is awry, this was still a straightforward piece to prepare. |
