Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Stradsett lies in western Norfolk about
4 miles northeast of the market town of Downham Market. The parish lies
adjacent to the A1122 road which connects Downham Market with Swaffham
and just east of the A134 which crosses on its way from Kings Lynn to
Thetford. There is no village as such for Stradsett just a scatter of
farms and cottages indeed the parish is totally dominated by the estate
of Stradsett Hall. This is perhaps indicative of the parishes status as
a closed parish where total land control was used by the major family
(in this case the Bagge family) to restrict access to the parish. The
estate, primarily of a landscaped park, is dominated by the fine Elizabethan
house of the Bagge family. |

Unfortunately the parish has yet to deposit the baptismal register for the period of the transcript. As a consequence the only record in the public domain is that shown in the Bishops Transcripts which were used to prepare this transcript. Rather fortuitously the quality of these records was rather superior to most examples and despite the challenge it proved rather straightforward in the main, there were some faint entries and evidence of damage to originals but nothing major. One drawback, however, is that the BTs terminate with 1871 leaving the final 9 years missing (contra the indexes of the Norfolk Record office 1865 was also present despite being listed as missing). Should the parish eventually deposit the register the transcript will be entirely rechecked and the missing entries added. |
