1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Stratton Strawless St Margaret |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Stratton Strawless
lies in eastern Norfolk roughly 5 miles south of the market town
of Aylsham. Stratton Strawless sits a mile east of the A140 road
which connects the city of Norwich through Aylsham to the coast at
Cromer. Stratton Strawless parish is a little curious, very narrow
on its north to south axis it spreads for some greater distance as
a narrow strip from the A140 eastwards. There are two distinct
groups of properties in the parish, that names on Ordnance Survey
maps is the cluster grouped around the church and sitting on the
lane headed for Buxton, the second group sits by the A140 and the
Hall, Stratton Strawless Hall was built c1800 for the local
Marsham family who dominate matters in this parish for several
centuries. The land hereabouts is poorer than normal Norfolk
farmland, a result of glacial deposition, consequently large
tracts of heathland dominate the local area, the local broom
making & tying being a feature of heathland management. Today
much of the area has been turned to forestry but pockets of arable
farming still exist in particular in the eastern part of the
parish. |

Sadly the register which covers the period of this transcript has not yet made its way into the public domain, consequently this transcript was prepared from the extant Bishop's Transcripts. There are 3 years missing from the coverage, 1873, 1875 & 1877 representing roughly 20 entries. Like most BTs the quality was best described as mixed with most clear and easily readable but some more tricky ones too. Of course, should that register come into the public area then the transcript will be amended for the missing entries and a re-check made to complete. |
