1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Swanton Abbott St Michael |
Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Swanton Abbott lies in north-eastern Norfolk
about 3 miles south of the market town of North Walsham and 5 miles east
of Aylsham. The village lies in a network of lanes to the west of the
B1150 road which links North Walsham to the city of Norwich. Swanton Abbott
has a distinct centre based on a prominent cross-roads at which are gathered
the remaining village facilities, a subsidiary settlement stands further
north on higher ground at Swanton Hill. The village is built on sloping
ground which falls away to the south and the valley of the River Bure. |

The registers for the period are covered by
two register volumes. The first commenced in 1813 covers the period up to
1867, the second is, however, still retained by the church and not in the
general public domain. The first register is filmed on Microfilm MF1643
in the collection of the Norfolk Record Office, this is an excellent modern
film with clear and contrasting images making it straightforward to transcribe.
For the latter period of the project period there are only Bishop's Transcripts
available and sadly these have a substantial gap - 40 entries between 1873
and 1877 are not available. The BT's are sadly not of the quality of the
earlier film and were, at times, a struggle to decipher. As a consequence a full guarantee cannot be given in this case that error has not been introduced. As records are also missing there will be a substantial recheck and completion of this transcript when the missing register finally is deposited and available. |
