1813 to 1880 Baptism Project Thetford Wesleyan Methodist Circuit |
Baptisms 1813 to 1837
The Wesleyan Methodist Circuit based on the market town of Thetford was created as early as 1797 from that operating based upon the port of King's Lynn. The Thetford Circuit should not be viewed purely as a Norfolk one, Thetford being based on the border with Suffolk, there are entries in this transcript which refer not only to Suffolk villages but also out into the Fenland as far as Cambridgeshire. The only register which survives within the period of the project is that deposited with The National Archives following legislation in 1837. This register has been filmed by TNA and a copy is held at the Norfolk Record Office on Microfilm MF1157. This film is not of the standard usually achieved today with milky images lacking in contrast and clarity but is just about adequate to the task. Sadly baptismal registers commencing in 1885 do survive perhaps indicating they once continued throughout the intervening period. This loss to the public domain is sad as, given the volumes in this register, then in excess of 2,000 baptismal records are not available to complete what would have been a substantial transcript. It is to be hoped these records are still extant and if they should emerge they will be added to this transcript. |
