The parish of Tilney All Saints, one of three Tilney's
in this area, lies in the west of Norfolk within that portion of Norfolk
lying in the Fens. Tilney All Saints is located about 4 miles southwest
of the port of King's Lynn and stands just to the north of the busy A47
road which heads westwards from Kings Lynn towards Wisbech & Peterborough.
Tilney All Saints is a small and relatively compact village clustered
around the church on the lane leading towards Clenchwarton. The land around
Tilney was long ago reclaimed from The Wash and is tremendously fertile
making the area very prosperous during the time of this transcript, today
agriculture still dominates and besides the normal grain and oil seed
the growing of vegetables is a notable feature of the landscape. The village
stands at just 3 metres above present day sea levels, the sea having been
forced northwards over 5 miles by successive reclamations. The flat lands
and vast skies are a feature of the area. |

| Two standard 800-entry register books cover the period of this transcript, they are both deposited with the Wisbech Fen Museum rather than Norfolk Record Office and both are unfilmed. The first register is covered by Bishop's Transcripts but the period of the second register has major gaps, as a consequence the latter register was viewed as an original document and used to prepare this transcript. The BTs are adequate to the task and working with the original removes any image quality issues for the second register. Other than the geography of their storage this was a straightforward piece to prepare. |
