Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Tilney cum Islington lies in western Norfolk
about 4 miles southwest of the port of King's Lynn. There is no distinct
village as such to Tilney cum Islington, the main concentration of property
being stretched along a raised bank between the Smeeth Lode and Mill Basin
close to Wiggenhall St Mary the Virgin. Otherwise the parish is a flat
fen, reclaimed from the former course of the river Ouse and situated to
the south of the A47 road which connects King's Lynn with Wisbech in Cambridgeshire.
Today the area is intensively farmed with market gardening joining arable
crops as the major source of revenue. Most of the parish lies between
sea level and 3 metres higher and the countryside lacks contours for many
a mile leading to the famous Fenland "Big skies". |

This parish was one of the few which failed to adopt the standard register required by Rose's Act. From 1813 to 1827 they continued to enter baptisms into their extant composite register. Legal requirements were only met in 1828 when a Rose style register was commenced. These registers are deposited with Wisbech Fenland Museum but have been filmed and Norfolk Record Office's copy was used to prepare this transcript. The quality of image was not to the high standard achievable today but adequate to the task. |
