Baptisms 1813 to 1880
The parish of Wighton lies northern Norfolk just inland
from its northern North Sea coast. Wighton is located about 3 miles south
of the port of Wells Next the Sea and 2 miles north of Little Walsingham.
Wighton is a slightly linear village built along a narrow lane either
side of its crossing of the River Stiffkey and just east of the easternmost
road connecting Wells with the market town of Fakenham. This is a largely
arable farming area of rolling downs and big fields under vast skies.
The economy of Wighton would have been entirely dependent of arable farming
at the time of this transcript and little has changed today. The coming
of the railway hinted at diversification but it was the subject of the
Beching cuts and has resurrected as the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway
offering sightseeing trips for the many summer visitors to Wells. |

Two standard 800-entry register books cover the period of this transcript, the first running to 1858, the second running onward to completion in 1941. Both registers are filmed on microfilm but are also available as digitised images not only freely available on Familysearch but also on subscription on both major commercial providers. These images were utilised to prepare this transcript and were clear and adequate to the task. The clerical standards of the first register were not the best, with numerous marginal inclusions and times when sequence of completion was clearly lost and entries added from primary temporary notes. Spellings have been left for names exactly as written even if somewhat eccentric at times. |
