The ParishThe parish of Harlington lies in southern Bedfordshire on the edges of the Chiltern ranges which form a southward extension to the county and quite close to its border with neighbouring Hertfordshire. Harlington is located about 5 miles south of the market town of Ampthill. Harlington is a large and compact village sitting in lanes about a mile to the east of the A5120 road which links Ampthill with Dunstable. The village is tightly bordered to its west by the railway lines from Bedford to London and more modern still, the M1 motorway runs about a mile west of the village. The area around Harlington would have largely been exploited in a mixed farming regime although some quarrying of the local sandstone would have also occurred. Nowadays the area is largely arable except on the scarp slopes of the nearby Sundon Hills. The area of Harlington is drained by numerous small tributaries of the Rivers Flit & Ivel which drain northeastwards before joining the Great Ouse to the south of St Neots and reaching the North Sea through The Wash. Harlington is sited at around 100 metres above the sea although the village site is sloping and is 10 metres higher or lower from south to north. Harlington parish covered a fairly typically sized area for a Bedfordshire parish, its acreage of 1,900 or so acres being split into a large area based on the village with a smaller detached portion separated by a strip of Toddington parish. The parish would have supported a population of around 520 parishioners. In Domesday times Harlington was held by one Nigel of Aubigny and could offer 7 ploughs, some small meadows and an impressive 400 pigs. |
