The ParishThe parish of Tingrith is located in central southern Bedfordshire about 4 miles east of the market town of Woburn. Tingrith is a small and compact village located in lanes about 2 miles west of the A5120 road which connects Ampthill with Dunstable, the more modern M1 runs just east of Tingrith village. Much of Tingrith is located alongside an east to west running lane that connects Woburn with Harlington. Tingrith would largely have been an agricultural village although it is within the brick-making area of the county and undoubtedly some of that activity would have occurred. Tingrith is drained to the northeast by the headwaters of the River Flit, this river joins the Ivel and then Great Ouse to reach the North Sea through The Wash. Tingrith is sited at around 90 metres above the sea and much of the area surrounding is at or slightly higher than this level. Tingrith parish was of a fairly typical acreage for a Bedfordshire parish, it covered around 950 acres and would have supported a population of just under 160 parishioners. In Domesday times Tingrith was a small place, indeed; it was held by one Nigel of Aubigny and could offer just 3 ploughs and a woodland. |
