The ParishThe parish of Hedgerley lies in southeastern Buckinghamshire not too far from its borders with neighbouring Middlesex. Hedgerley is located about 3 miles southeast of the market town of Beaconsfield and 4 1/2 north of the modern town of Slough. Hedgerley is a small and compact village sitting a mile east of the A355 road which connects Beaconsfield with Slough. Modern communications, in the form of the M40 motorway, pass through the north of the parish a mile north to the north of the village. At the time of this transcript Hedgerley would have been a farming community with a mixed farming regime, both pastoral and arable. Today this is expensive real estate in London's leafy "stockbroker belt". Hedgerley is drained eastwards by small tributaries of the Alder Bourne which the Colne near Uxbridge and then the Thames near Staines before reaching the North Sea through the capital and the Thames Estuary. Hedgerley is sited at around 70 metres above the sea in rolling near-Chilterns countryside with local heights ranging to around 100 metres nearby. Hedgerley parish was small for this area, it covered just under 1,000 acres and would have supported a population near 150 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Hedgerley in Domesday Book. |
