The ParishThe parish of North Marston lies in central Buckinghamshire about 6 miles north of the town of Aylesbury. North Marston is a large village sited on a lane about 2 miles west of the A413 road which connects Aylesbury to Buckingham. Most of the properties in North Marston are spread along a half mile stretch of this north/south running lane or on the other lanes which head off it to both east and west. The area around the village is largely gently rolling arable farmland, the soils being heavy would have supported a mixed regime around the time of this transcript but have gone arable with the advent of heavy machinery. The parish is largely drained by small brooks these run northwestwards to form the Claydon Brook and this eventually joins the Great Ouse east of Buckingham, thence to The Wash. North Marston is sited at around 110 metres above the sea but local heights (Quainton Hill) rise to just short of 200 metres. North Marston parish was of a fairly typical size for the area, it covered around 1,900 acres and supported a population of just over 600 parishioners. In Domesday times North Marston was shared between 4 landowners, the book quantifies around 8 ploughs and some small meadows. |
