The ParishThe parish of Quainton lies in the western portion of central Buckinghamshire about 6 miles northwest of the town of Aylesbury. Quainton is a substantial village which is sited about 2 miles north of the A41 road which links Aylesbury with the Oxfordshire town of Bicester. The village is located at the foot of a substantial hill (Quainton Hill) which is topped with limestone protecting the soft clays beneath and being a prominent landmark for miles around, the hill is covered with footpaths and makes for good hiking. The village nestles at the foot along an east/west running lane. The land to the south of the village is an agricultural plain with a few streams draining to the southeast into the River Thame. Quainton sits at around 100 metres above sea level, the hill rising a further 80 metres from the doorsteps. The parish is a substantial one for lowland Britain containing over 5,300 acres which supported just over a thousands parishioners, most in the village itself. In Doomsday times this was clearly a smaller settlement as it supported only 9 ploughs although there was woodland and meadow supporting 100 pigs. |
